The real use for Objective-C is Mac, iPhone and iPad development. There are other niche uses but really the point of learning Objective-C is to do iOS or OSX development for Apple products.

My advice is to use the best tool for the job - for Apple products the best tool is Objective-C. Other platforms and the web have other best-fit tools.

Great intro to Objective-C. Comparing common programming techniques to how they are normally done in other languages is a great way to come up to speed quickly. Thanks for such a well-written overview.

@G3 - The thing with Objective-C is that all the stuff with the square brackets is true and you are correct in how you are to use them. But,

Objective-C is an *extension* of the C programming language. So that means that all the rules of C apply in addition to the new rules you learn when you pick up Objective-C. So, function calls like the NSLog() and others will follow the normal C syntax.

Ultimately, the best way to find out how to use an object or function is to look at the declaration in the header file (this is something that you can see in XCode).

Hi, i'm trying to learn Objective-C and I have a question about messaging. I'm a bit confused about when to use the brackets and when to use the parentheses on objects. I know that passing a message looks like this: [myObject release]. But when you call NSLog isn't that supposed to be using messaging syntax too? Why is it called like this: NSLog(lotsOfInsertedStuffString)?
